Ground control for David Bowie fans: Heddon Street is already familiar to you as the location of the 1972 Ziggy Stardust photo album cover, which is commemorated by a blue plaque. Now, just a few doors down, the tribute to the musician continues with The Starman, which opened in early July.
Taking over the former site of bar/club Strawberry Moon, The Starman is making some ch-ch-ch (sorry, we’ll stop that) changes to the Mayfair dining scene. The team behind this is Barworks, who recently opened a gas station in King’s Cross https://www.hot-dinners.com/2021101510955/Gastroblog/Latest-news/gas-station-kings-cross-granary-square -restaurant-bar as well as Hackney’s Mare Street market. The Bowie homage pretty much stops at the name and historic site, so if you’ve been anticipating Ziggy Stardust cupcakes or food impersonating Bowie, know that perfectly poured pints and hearty bar fare are what waiting for you instead.
Here’s a sampling of what you can expect food-wise:
Jersey rock oysters with lemon and shallot vinegar
Kidneys stuffed with homemade mustard and parsley
Beef and marrow pie with mash
Soy Glazed Tofu with Bok Choy, Brown Rice, Ginger and Cilantro
There’s a very decent drinks list, with wines from around the world, as well as a huge range of draft beers (mainly British), gluten-free, low-alcohol offerings and a wide selection of spirits.
