London, January 19: Mott the Hoople drummer and collaborator of the late singer David Bowie, Dale Griffin, has died following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 67 years old. Griffin, a founding member of British rock band Mott the Hoople, best known for his classic tracks “Roll away the stone” and “All the young dudes,” breathed his last on Sunday, reports “He died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday evening,” said Angel Air Records’ Peter Purnell. Also Read – Bought for $5, David Bowie‘s original painting is now up for auction after being found in a Canadian store

He called Griffin “one of the nicest, friendliest, most talented men I’ve ever known”. Born in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, Griffin played in several local bands before forming Silence with vocalist Stan Tippens, keyboardist Verden Allen, guitarist Mick Ralphs and bassist Pete Overend Watts in the late 1960s. 1972 Mott the Hoople scored their biggest hit with the Bowie-written and produced anthem “All the young dudes”. The band broke up in the mid-1970s, with Griffin later working as a producer for BBC live music sessions, with a range of artists including Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins and Pulp. Mott the Hoople reformed in 2009, but Griffin, who was already ill, only appeared during the encores, his place being taken by Martin Chambers of the Pretenders. Several rock stars took to Twitter to pay their respects to the British drummer following news of his death on Monday. The drummer’s death comes just a week after his collaborator Bowie passed away after a long and secret battle with cancer. Griffin is survived by longtime partner Jean Smith.
