Gary Glitter could be released on the same day within a few weeks because he is considered a “low risk” to the public, according to reports.

The 77-year-old former popstar, jailed in 2015 for sexually assaulting young girls, was to spend the rest of her life in prison.

But he can be transferred to an open prison at HMP Class C The Verne in Dorset “in weeks” and then be eligible to spend days in the community, the sun reports. He would then be eligible for full release by February 2023.

A source told the newspaper that the ashamed singer was “smiling ear to ear” at the news.

Governors apparently viewed him as posing little risk to the public, but Justice Secretary Robert Buckland could block the move.

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was convicted of historic sexual assaults at the height of his glory in the 1970s, including the attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl.

He had previously been jailed in Vietnam for sex crimes against young girls.

One of her victims in the South Asian country told The Sun she was still “too scared to get close to anyone” and that Glitter should never be released.

The woman, known as Diem to protect her identity, was assaulted by the ten-year-old popstar.

Now 26, she said: “He will always be a terrible danger to young girls. It’s terrifying to think that he might soon be free, even though he’s halfway around the world from me.

The singer is said to be worth between £ 1-6million. His songs are blacklisted on UK radio stations but are still played in the US, potentially earning him around £ 250,000 a year.

But record companies said he would receive no royalties when his Rock and Roll song Part 2 was used in the 2019 movie The Joker.

Universal Music Publishing Group has said it owns the copyright and will not pay it anything.

If released, Glitter would still be on conditions and could be recalled to jail for the remainder of his sentence. He will also remain on the sex offender registry for life.
