Are buyers looking for more than that? Surrey Roxy Music house for sale

Although its price has been reduced by a third from what it was on sale two years ago, the former home of the Roxy Music lead guitarist still hasn’t moved.

This begs the question of whether buyers are looking for – in the words of the band’s 1980s track – more than that?

The unusual property is circular in shape and has an impressive recording studio where many of the band’s songs were recorded.

The seven-bedroom property is located near Chertsey, Surrey, and is on the market for £5.95million through estate agents Fine & Country.

The studio is also a place where other artists have recorded, including Paul Weller, Robert Wyatt and David Gilmour.

The property’s studio is where 1980s band Roxy Music (pictured) composed the tracks for their album Flesh and Blood and Avalon

The studio is a former 19th century coaching inn, where Roxy Music composed tracks for their albums Flesh and Blood and Avalon.

The studio was owned by the band’s lead guitarist, Phil Manzanera, and it hosted David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine and Paul Weller of The Jam.

Most recently, the property was home to Renée Zellweger while filming her role in Judy Garland’s award-winning biopic.

It also served as the backdrop for Agatha Christie’s Poirot after several episodes were filmed there. And the sleek design was an ideal setting for Nintendo’s 2008 commercials, which featured Girls Aloud.

The property was built in 1936 by architect Sir Raymond McGrath, who designed the house to keep its owners’ same-sex relationship a secret.

This included building elements into the couple’s bedroom which allowed it to be split in two, keeping their relationship a secret at a time when homosexuality was a criminal offence.

The property includes eight acres of land, including a Japanese-inspired wooden walkway with small ponds.

In the spring of 2020, tech entrepreneur Osman Kent reportedly tried to sell the property since 2016.

He acquired the estate in 1997. But the house had become too big for him and his wife, and they even reduced the price of the estate by a third in an attempt to attract a buyer.

The average price for a property sold in Chertsey over the past 12 months is £477,490.

It compares to £326,176 for the whole country, according to property website Zoopla.

Daniel Copley of Zoopla said: “This flagship property has a lot to offer buyers including 6,500 square feet of bright and airy open space, seven bedrooms and a large garage.

“The star of the show is undoubtedly the state-of-the-art recording studio, which was originally built by Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera and was where many of the band’s most famous tracks have been recorded.”
