A modest proposal to deal with the Gary Glitter / Joker movie problem

During an important scene in the Joker film, Arthur Fleck descends the steps which we have already seen struggling to climb, to the backing track of the song Rock And Roll Part 2, performed and co-written by Gary Glitter. It’s a song that in the UK is no longer played. Gary Glitter, one of the biggest names in glam rock in the ’70s and TV host in the’ 80s, is now known as a convicted pedophile on several occasions.

Real name Paul Gadd, he is currently serving a sentence at Verne Prison in Dorset. Originally arrested in 1997 after a technician discovered pornographic images of children on the hard drive of a laptop computer he had taken for repair, his appearance in the Spice Girls film World of spices was cut accordingly and in 1999 he was sentenced to four months in prison and entered into the sex offender registry after admitting to downloading over 4,000 items of child pornography. Subsequently, he left the UK for Spain and changed his name, then moved to Cuba after being exposed by local media, then Cambodia, then Thailand, then Vietnam as his reputation gripped him. In 2005, after eyewitnesses reported seeing him take two young girls home, a 15-year-old girl was found alive in her apartment and questioned by authorities, but Gadd had fled. He was arrested while trying to board a flight to Bangkok. A number of girls as young as eleven have claimed that Gadd had sex with them. In 2006 Glitter was tried for committing obscene acts with two girls, aged 10 and 11, and was sentenced to three years in prison, and after serving a reduced sentence was deported to the UK. In 2012, Glitter was arrested and questioned by police, then charged with eight counts of sexual offenses against two girls aged 12 to 14 between 1977 and 1980. He was convicted of attempted rape on four counts. of indecent assault and one of having had sex. with a girl under 13 and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

As a result of the arrests and convictions his music was blacklisted by UK radio stations, but broadcasts and sales in the US saw him make around £ 250,000 a year. He also made money from royalties from a sample used in the Oasis track Hello, the KLF runway Doctorin ‘The TARDIS and also won £ 300,000 after his music was featured in the Oscar nominated trailer for Silver Linings Playbook.

In the United States, while his work is familiar. as a performer he is virtually unknown. Rock And Roll Part 2 is popular during sports games where it seems to be known as’ The Hey Song ‘music for?’

What is the solution ? Here is a thought. Re-record the song and broadcast it widely in the United States. A comprehensive media broadcast campaign. Now Gary Glitter will be making some income from it, that’s right, but he’s already making significant numbers a year in royalties anyway.

Just rewrite the lyrics. Instead of ‘Rock and roll… hey. Rock and roll, Rock and roll… hey. Rock and roll. Rock and roll… ‘you use the following lyrics which scan perfectly. “Pedophile… hey, pedophile, pedophile… hey pedophile, pedophile…”

Record this. Release it, make it ubiquitous. At this point, no stage music producer will dare to play the original. And even daring directors like Todd Phillips will think twice.

The only danger is that the new version suddenly becomes the new musical theme in Type of family.
